Dust Exposure in Sydney Tunnels
The Incident
Ronald worked on various tunnelling projects across Sydney, often in dusty underground conditions. His work exposed him to dust while he was using personal protective equipment (PPE) that did not fit appropriately.
In his late 30s, Ronald was diagnosed with silicosis. The diagnosis marked a devastating change in his life, affecting not only his health but also his ability to work and support his young family.
Serious Illness and Its Impact
Ronald experiences breathlessness and other disabilities that limit his ability to work. The impact extended beyond his physical health: the loss of independence and financial security also contributed to a depressive disorder, adding to the challenges he and his family faced.
Living with the Long-Term Consequences
For Ronald, the consequences of silicosis reach far beyond the workplace. His health has affected the independence he once had and his ability to provide for his family, leaving him facing a very different future from the one he had expected.
Having left school in Year 9 with no formal qualifications, Ronald faces significant barriers to finding alternative employment. Despite having more than 25 working years ahead of him, he is unlikely to work again because of his breathlessness and other disabilities.
Why Specialist Legal Advice Was Required
Ronald’s circumstances highlight the importance of considering the full impact of an occupational illness: the conditions in which exposure occurred, the physical and psychological consequences, and the effect on a person’s ability to earn a living. For Ronald, the story is not simply about a diagnosis, but about the loss of independence and financial security at a young age.
